Legend says that Fafnir was once the son of the dwarf king Hreidmar but he became overwhelmed with greed, killing his father and taking all the treasures promised to Odin for himself. The gold was cursed however and Fafnir became a mighty dragon who stood guarded the treasure. Sigurd, a young hero was tasked by Odin to slay the dragon which he did successfully after thrusting his weapon through the beast.
